NHT Property Recieves Energy Star Certification

In February 2017, NHT-Enterprise-owned St. Dennis Apartments, located in Washington, D.C., earned the EPA's Energy Star Certification. Typically, Energy Star certification is associated with high-efficiency consumer products like dishwashers, refrigerators and washing machines, but entire buildings are eligible for the certification as well. Earning Energy Star Certification means that St. Dennis operates much more efficiently than the average multifamily building.

The certification test process revealed that St. Dennis performs in the top five percentile of similar buildings across the country. To certify buildings, EPA awards an Energy Star Score that ranges from 1-100. The score is determined by the building's energy use in comparison to its relative size. Buildings with a score of 75 or higher are eligible for certification and considered to be highly efficient. St. Dennis earned a score of 95, indicating it is among the most efficient buildings in the country.

Sustainable retrofits at St. Dennis are responsible for such a high Energy Star Score. During renovation, St. Dennis was outfitted with solar panels and highly efficient lighting, insulation, mechanical systems, and appliances. These strategies have resulted in a highly efficient building with low operational costs. Sustaining low operational costs allows NHT-Enterprise to operate high-quality affordable multifamily housing and to re-direct funding from utility expenses to other critical needs such as resident service programs. NHT-Enterprise is currently working to secure Energy Star Certification for Copeland Manor, Meridian Manor, Mountain View and Monseñor Romero.
